Our Story

History

It was 1971 in the heart of Alabama - in a small town nestled between the one-time capital of the Confederacy and a city they called “Bombingham” - where a group of Baptists decided that story didn’t have to be our story. It didn’t have to be our children’s story. It didn’t have to be our community’s story.

University Baptist Church was chartered on October 3, 1971. Rev. George “Dub” Steincross, formerly of Montevallo First Baptist Church, was named the founding pastor. His goal was simply to follow the love of Jesus wherever it may lead. And in the summer of ‘71, it led him and 225 others to step out and start a new Baptist church, which would be dedicated to the grace of God for all people, regardless of skin color.

More than half a century later, the UBC family is still striving to live up to that example. Our goal is to be a people dedicated to the love of Christ for all, regardless of matters related to race & ethnicity, gender & sexuality, or politics & social class. Whoever you are, wherever you are, you will be welcomed at UBC. No asterisks. No exceptions. No fuss.
